A real adventure
This was one of my favorite trips I ever took! Seeing the Wadi El Rayan waterfall in the middle of the desert was fascinating. I also enjoyed the 4x4 ride over the dunes. It reminded me of the landscapes in the White Desert I visited before. I also loved the views from Mudawara Mountain. The rock formations reminded me a little of the black desert near Farafra. If you’re looking for something to do outside of the city, this safari is 10/10!
Beautiful views and lots of fun
I hate planning out how to get to places, so the included hotel pickup and dropoff were a game-changer. Besides this, my favorite part was riding a camel. It’s a very special experience with beautiful views. The scenery reminded me a bit of the Bahariya Oasis. I also enjoyed sandboarding and was surprised at how easy it is to get the hang of it. Having lunch at the Bedouin camp felt like we were desert camping. This is a great way to experience the desert while having fun!

SCENIC DESERT JOURNEY
Your Cairo desert safari will begin with a hotel pickup from Cairo or Giza. You will first drive to Qarun Lake. It is a brackish lake covering approximately 85 square miles (220 square km). Here you'll learn how this lake was a part of Crocodilopolis, an ancient city from Pharaonic times. The lake also historically drew water from the Nile River through the Bahr Yussef canal. This helped support agriculture and settlements for thousands of years. Take a short break at the lake, enjoy the view, and take photos of the calm waters. Your guide will show you unique desert formations and share the history of the Fayoum region. After this stop, continue toward the Wadi El Rayan Desert. It is a protected area created in the 1970s to connect Lake Qarun with the Fayoum depression. Take in beautiful desert views, small valleys, and see desert animals while you drive.
HAVE SOME DESERT FUN
Upon arrival, board a 4x4 vehicle for an exciting dune drive. The sand dunes can reach several meters high, making the ride both thrilling and scenic. After the 4x4 adventure, try sandboarding down the sandy slopes. Watch for wildlife such as the slender-horned gazelle. Next, visit Wadi El Rayan waterfalls, Egypt’s only desert waterfall. Your guide will explain how these falls were formed and their ecological significance. Continue with a camel or horse ride along the shores of Wadi El Rayan Lakes. Then, climb Mudawara Mountain for panoramic views of the surrounding desert and lakes. This is the perfect spot for photos and capturing the beautiful desert scenery.
REST AND ENJOY NATURE
After exploring the mountain, you will head to Magic Lake. The lake is known for its water changing color depending on sunlight and mineral content. Take a short break to enjoy the view and relax. Next, stop at a desert camp for a delicious BBQ lunch, set in a calm desert environment. Your guide will share fun facts about the desert, local wildlife, and the area's history. Spend some time taking photos and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Finally, you will be dropped off at your hotel, bringing your Cairo desert safari adventure to an end.

How the River Nile shaped the desert
The lakes and valleys you’ll see on the Cairo Desert Safari weren’t always here. Thousands of years ago, Pharaohs built canals from the Nile River. This clever irrigation system brought water into the Fayoum depression. They dug the Bahr Yussef canal, stretching over 62 miles (100 kilometers).
It turned the desert into fertile land for crops, and Qarun Lake became a hub for fishing and farming. Villages grew along the canals, and trade flourished. You can still see the effects of this ancient engineering today. It shows how humans adapted to survive in the desert thousands of years ago.
