DISCOVER THE GIZA PLATEAU

Visit the Pyramids of Giza, the last remaining wonder of the ancient world. Built more than 4,500 years ago during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, these massive stone monuments are among the oldest in the world. Millions of people each year visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. The royal tombs were designed to protect the pharaohs’ bodies and help their souls reach the afterlife. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest, originally standing 146 meters tall (now about 138 meters due to erosion). It is made from about 2.3 million limestone blocks and is believed that it took around 20 years to build. About 20,000 to 30,000 skilled workers worked on it. They lived nearby and worked in organized teams - not slaves, as many once thought.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PYRAMIDS

Next to it stands the Pyramid of Khafre, known for the smooth white casing stones still visible near its top. The Pyramid of Menkaure is smaller, built with layers of red granite. Around them, you’ll also see the Queen’s Pyramids, smaller but beautifully made for royal wives and family members. Walking across the Giza Plateau, it’s easy to see why these ancient structures are called a masterpiece of human engineering.

THE MYSTERY OF THE GREAT SPHINX

At the edge of the Giza Plateau, you’ll come face to face with the Great Sphinx, one of the most famous monuments in the world. Carved from a single block of limestone more than 4,500 years ago, it has the body of a lion and the face of a pharaoh. It is believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre. Standing 73 meters long and 20 meters high, the Sphinx has watched over the pyramids for thousands of years, surviving wind, sand, and time itself. As you stand before it, you can see the details of its face, the missing nose, and the marks of ancient repairs. The Great Sphinx still holds many mysteries: how it was built, what it once looked like, and what secrets it guards.

ANCIENT TOMBS AND BOAT PITS

At the Giza Plateau, there’s much more to discover than the famous pyramids. Across the desert landscape, you’ll find ancient tombs and boat pits that reveal how the Egyptians honored their rulers in life and beyond. The tombs, called mastabas, were built for nobles, priests, and workers who served the pharaohs. Nearby are the boat pits, where real wooden ships were buried for the pharaohs’ journey to the afterlife. The most remarkable is Khufu’s Solar Boat, made of cedar wood and over 40 meters long.
